Il turco in Italia - Opéra Monte-Carlo
Like The Barber of Seville, unjustly rejected at its premiere because of the public's favour for Paisiello's eponymous opera, created 34 years earlier, Rossini's The Turk in Italy will see its first scalding reception with a heat worthy of the polar cap. However, the initial impression of unnecessary duplication with the much appreciated Italian in Algiers will not stand the test of time.
If the two works share the same taste for Turkishness, an Italian heroine as intelligent as she is charming and an oriental protagonist, not very well equipped to deal with the cunning of women, The Turk appears to us today as a major work. The work is full of irresistible musical inventiveness: from its opening with its surprising harmony, the Turk is a succession of musical discoveries and funny situations. The games of seduction that Cecilia Bartoli's Fiorilla will not fail to conceal and the humanity of the Turk, played by the formidable Ildar Abdrazakov, should allow the audience to savour an exceptional moment of theatre.
